Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT
334 AM MDT Tue Apr 8 2025
.SYNOPSIS...A weak system will bring a mainly dry cold front
through the region, dampening the warming trend through Wednesday
across northern Utah. As strong high pressure builds into the
region Thursday, temperatures will quickly increase to 10 to 20
degrees above normal through at least Saturday.
&&
.SHORT TERM (THROUGH 12Z THURSDAY)...A near-zonal flow is in place
over Utah this morning as the ridge that was over the area yesterday
has now flattened in response to the weakening shortwave trough that
crossed Idaho and far northern Utah overnight. Additional weak
disturbances will continue to cross Idaho into tomorrow, maintaining
the zonal flow in place.
A weak cold front pushing through northern Utah today will bring a
slight cooling trend, although southern Utah will continue to warm
ahead of the front. A final weak trailing disturbance is expected to
graze northern Utah tonight, pushing another weak reinforcing
boundary into the area. Temperatures over northern Utah tomorrow
should hold steady or rise ever so slightly (as fewer clouds
tomorrow will aid mixing) as a result, while continuing to warm
across the south.
Some areas will continue to see enhanced winds today, owing to the
deep westerly flow and strengthening westerly surface pressure
gradient. The winds will not be strong enough to warrant any
highlights, but gusts 35-40 mph will be possible in Uinta County,
WY, and the western Uinta Basin. Otherwise, measurable
precipitation is not expected through the short term forecast
period, although cannot rule out brief sprinkles or high-elevation
flurries along the Idaho border through this afternoon.
.LONG TERM (After 12z/6 AM Thursday)...An amplified ridge overhead
keeps temperatures well above average across the region through
Friday, with highs running 10 to 20 degrees above normal each day.
Temperatures peak on Friday, with highs in the high-70s to low-80s
for most valley locations, and low-90s for lower Washington county.
Dry conditions to continue, though accelerated snowmelt will lead to
increased flows on area rivers, creeks, and streams into the weekend.
Warm temperatures will stick around through Saturday, though highs
will trend a few degrees cooler as a shortwave trough nudges into
the Great Basin. Increased southwesterly winds will develop across
the region on Saturday afternoon ahead of this system. As the trough
continues to track eastward, a cold front is expected to pass
through the region late Saturday into Sunday. Precipitation chances
associated with this frontal passage have increased with recent
guidance, with a 20-30% chance for light valley rain and mountain
snow showers across northern Utah and southwest Wyoming late
Saturday into Sunday. Temperatures are expected to cool down quite a
bit behind this frontal passage on Sunday, with current guidance
supporting likely chances for temperatures to dip near or below
seasonal averages.
&&
.AVIATION...KSLC...Gusty south winds materialized early this
morning at KSLC, but are expected to become lighter out of the
southeast after roughly 9z. Otherwise, expect winds to transition
northwesterly after 16z. Increased mid-to-high level cloud cover
will continue through this evening, before gradually clearing
Wednesday morning as high pressure builds over the region.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions to prevail
across the forecast area through the TAF period. Winds remain light
out of the south-southwest for all regional terminals this morning,
with gusty westerly winds developing this afternoon. Increased mid-
to-high level cloud coverage will continue through this evening,
gradually clearing into Wednesday morning as high pressure builds
over the region.

.SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
UT...None.
WY...None.
